A Taste Of History

In 1926, Ralph and Margaret Stookey opened a small road side stand on Route 11 in West Nanticoke. By its side was an open pit where large cuts of fresh pork were smoked daily. They called it Stookey’s Barbeque and that’s where Ralph and Margaret served a wood smoked pork barbeque sandwich in a secret homemade sauce. That was the beginning of a tradition that still flourishes today.

“Been coming here since the 70s. My Grandmother would make Pop Pop stop here every trip on our way to and from our cousins dairy farm. The smoked BBQ sandwiches are great, A+!”

— Shari W., CA

“Last weekend I was in town from California. I took my mom and my aunt Betty out for lunch in Nanticoke. We drove by Stookeys and they both exclaimed how long it had been since they had been there. We stopped and had the best barbecue ever. Keep up the good work!”

— Stephen L., Blairstown, NJ

“I've been eating here since I was a kid. The BBQ sandwiches are thinly sliced smoked pork, ham, beef, or turkey topped with pickle relish. The pork BBQ's are my favorite! All the food is delicious and served by friendly staff. Definitely give Stookey's a try, you won't be disappointed.”

— Laurel M., Arlington, VA

“They have been in operation since the 1920s which tells you this place is fantastic and definitely worth the stop (think about it, they survived the Great Depression, their BBQ is that good!).”

— John C., Drums, PA

“My parents are always telling me to do something with my life. So now I eat at Stookey's everyday! The food is amazing and definitely worth 5 stars!”
